Disabled Facilities Grants For Stairlifts, Wheelchair Lifts...

from:

Have you considered how old age or disability could affect the
way you use your home? There are lots of technologies which can
help you use your home for longer, but sometimes these can seem
prohibitively expensive; upping sticks to a retirement bungalow
or flat seems the only option. Luckily local councils offer help
with funding these types of improvements to your home.

Disabled Facilities Grants are available from local councils and
can help towards the cost of adapting your home, to allow you to
stay in it for as long as possible. Applications for the grant
are approved, if the local council considers the proposals
reasonable, practical, and necessary to your requirements.

Those eligible to receive the grant are disabled or are applying
on behalf of someone living at the property who is disabled. The
applicant is either the owner of the property, or representing
the owner, and a landlord may apply on behalf of a disabled
tenant.

The disabled person must be intending to occupy the property as
the main resident throughout the five year grant period, and
they must live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Scottish
residents should contact their social services for information
on available grants.

Disabled Facilities Grants can be used to pay for adaptations to
your home in order to make movement around your home easier and
allow you to carry on living independently. An occupational
therapist will assess your home environment before advising any
adaptations.

Depending on the occupational therapist's assessment, a DFG
could be awarded to allow you access to an upstairs bathroom or
toilet, installing a stairlift or through-floor chair lift. It
could also include widening doorways, installing ramps,
installing downstairs bathrooms, and adapting light and power
controls to make them safer and easier to use.

The DFG is paid based on a financial assessment of your average
weekly income, outgoings and assets. There is no means test for
families of disabled children under 19 years of age.

Depending on the result of the assessment, the grant could cover
from one to one hundred percent of the cost of the works, but
the maximum amount of grant is usually thirty thousand pounds
per application, minus any contribution you are expected to make.

So why not see if you could get help from your local council
with essential works to your home? It will allow you to remain
independent in your own home for longer and you never know how
much of the cost of the adaptations could be covered by the
Disabled Facilities Grant.
